Now, with this new added feature, users can set up alerts to automatically post their updates to Twitter accounts, further motivating them by sharing their progress with followers.

There's lot around the web to read about the new Microsoft Bing. Got through a blog to find some more tips and tricks other than self experimenting.

1. Use the full version of Bing

If you are using Bing outside North America, chances are that you seeing a localized version of Bing that may be missing some features. For instance, the Indian version of Bing.com doesn’t have search history and the image on the Bing home page here is not interactive as in the US version.

To explore the full version of Bing, go to this page and set English - US as your default region. You can now enjoy all the Bing features from anywhere.

2. Track Companies from the IE Favorites Bar

If you search for a company stock (e.g. GOOG or MSFT), Bing will automatically create a web slice for that company which you may then add to IE 8 and track the performance directly from the favorites bar. You need Internet Explorer 8 to try this feature.

3. Watch Preview of Hulu Videos outside US

Hulu hosts some popular popular TV shows but the problem is that you can only watch these videos if your computer has US based IP address.

However, Bing lets you watch shot previews of Hulu video even outside US. Just search for any TV show episode on Bing Videos (see example) and hover the mouse over any of the video thumbnail to watch a short clip.

4. Save and Email search results

With Bing, you can save your search history on to a local folder inside Bing or to your Windows Skydrive account. Alternatively, you may send your search queries to a friend via email or publish them on your Facebook wall via Bing. You’ll need Silverlight to share queries in Bing.

5. RSS Feeds of Search Results

Unlike Google or Yahoo, Bing offers RSS feeds for their web search results that you can subscribe to inside any feed reader. Your browser should be able to auto-detect the RSS feed of Bing pages or you can append &format=rss to any Bing search URL and convert it into a feed.

This RSS feature is not available for Image or Video search in Bing.

6. Find Pages That Link to MP3 Files or Documents

Bing (and Live Search) supports a unique "contains" search operator that lets you find web pages that contain links to particular file types.

For instance, a search like susan boyle contains:mp3 will show pages that are about the British singer and that also link to MP3 files. Replace mp3 with doc to search pages that contain links to Word Documents.

BANGALORE: Will you Bing it, or google it? That’s the big question the world’s biggest software company Microsoft will be asking over one billion internet search across the world, after the company will launch its new search engine Bing on June 3, and prepares to compete more effectively with Google.

While Google invented the advertising-based search model, which produces most popular items for each query, Microsoft is aiming to change the game by calling Bing a ‘decision engine’ , which will offer more insights to users for helping them take decisions, and not necessarily throw the most popular and relevant items.

“We are introducing a new level of organisation to search results, and our differentiator will be the best results for query,” Satya Nadella, senior vice- president (R&D , online services division) Microsoft told mediapersons in a press conference on Friday.

For instance, if a user runs a search for British Airways, Bing will provide the airline’s customer service centre number, apart from a host of best deals sorted by trends in ticket price for a particular sector. Moreover, an opinion index will also rate the search results based on an algorithm developed by Microsoft . Codenamed Kimo for past many months, Bing in Chinese language means a certain answer, or response to a query.

Avid search users, such as 29-year-old Prashanth Prakash in Bangalore, who is working in market analytics division of an FMCG major, Bing could be the search engine of choice. “Google is great, but I think you still have to run multiple search queries to get that right answer. If Bing can change that, I will surely shift my search engine,” he said.

When Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive was interviewed by ET earlier this month, he had said that his company would focus on providing the right answers to search queries. “I can’t speak for Indian languages, but in English, average search query is 2.2 words because people have seen that if you type longer, you get worse answers.

Is there an opportunity for innovation here — I think so,” Mr Ballmer had said. “Almost half of all queries never answer somebody’s questions. So, 50% of time you don’t get what you are looking for — that’s interesting.”

Bing seems to do good as with my experiment I found it more exact and avoidance of crap. It needed less no. of keywords to match the exact needed result. But, for the optimization guys it looks that they have to work harder as Bing enters into the market of 10billion search users, and for sure there are microsoft admirer's around. Solar Powered Ariel Vehicle

An unmanned aerial vehicle that's intended to use a combination of solar power and stored electricity is being developed by Ascent Solar Technologies and Bye Aerospace, both companies announced Tuesday.

Ascent Solar will be supplying flexible thin-film photovoltaic modules designed for Bye's drone, the Silent Sentinel.

Bye will be using a Williams International FJ33 turbofan engine that will draw power from stored electrical power in a lithium-ion battery and the photovoltaic panels on the plane.

The result will be a quiet, low-emission hybrid UAV with added endurance, according to Bye.

The Silent Sentinel is intended for military surveillance purposes, but could also be used in the commercial world for things like pipeline and power line inspection, forest fire watch, and aerial photography.

While Bye said it has had proposal meetings with U.S. government officials, no contract for the vehicle has yet been signed with the U.S. military.

Bye will not be the first to combine solar panels with a drone-type aircraft. British defense contractor Qinetiq built and tested the Zephyr, a 66-pound glider that flew an unofficial record 54 hours straight (according to Qinetiq's own report) over White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico in 2007. In early 2008, DARPA announced it was developing the Vulture, a solar-powered aircraft that would "fly" for 5 years straight, though arguably that UAV could be considered more of a satellite in orbit.

World’s Largest 38500-meal Solar Kitchen in India!

The system has been installed as a collaboration between the Academy for a Better World and Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, with technology from Solare-Brücke, Germany. With 84 receivers and cooking at 650 degrees, the system can produce up to 38,500 meals a day when the sun is at its peak!

The solar kitchen has been set up at Taleti, near Mount Abu, situated at a height of 1219 m above sea level in Rajasthan. It boasts of a six-module solar steam cooking system and a total of 84 parabolic dish concentrators shell type receivers. Each oval parabolic concentrator has a reflective surface area of 9.2 square meters, and reflect sunlight on the receivers by special white glass pieces. Steam is collected in the header pipes, which is then directed via insulated pipes to cooking vessels in the kitchen.

The system generates temperatures of up to about 650 degrees, and 3500-4000 kg of steam per day. The food is cooked in 200-400 liters capacity cooking pots, producing an average of 20,000 meals a day, and up to 38,500 meals per day during periods of peak solar radiation maximum.

A total of $5 million has been spent on this endeavor. The Academy for a Better World is interested in renewable energy technologies and the program is part of a special demonstration project of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India.

World's Largest Solar Stadium

Taiwan has just completed building what is being touted as the largest solar-powered stadium in the world. Though the original name is not known yet, it is called ‘World Games Stadium’ in English. It comes with massive and gigantic solar panels which harness all the solar energy in order to generate electricity that could be used by the stadium.

It has a 14,155 square meter roof and it harnesses about 1.4 gigawatt hours of electricity every year. The coolest part of the stadium is that when the stadium is not being used, 80% of the neighborhood where the stadium is located can also be powered through the electricity generated for the stadium on days when the stadium is not in use.

This seems certainly like the most interesting concept ever. Let me change the word. This is no more a concept but is a true and working model which can be imbibed by other nations and governments when they build stadiums meant for thousands of people. It would not only save energy, but also make sure the world is cleaner and greener place.

New Sony PS3 Bundle offers inFamous Game and 80GB Storage

I4U, in its report, states that the 80 GB Sony PlayStation 3 console with an action title - inFamous - has been listed on the UK-based Amazon site. Does this mean that the new Sony PS3 bundle is all set to release in the UK?

Feature-wise, the gaming console comprises of an 80GB SKU and a copy of the upcoming action title infamous, developed by Sucker Punch. Amazon also offers a free, selected HDMI cable with the bundle.

It is expected to carry a price tag of £299 (approx. Rs. 22,600) and will release across the United Kingdom by May 29, 2009 through Amazon.co.uk. KDDI intros waterproof, solar-powered Sharp SH002 Phone

A month back, we had reported about an anonymous solar-powered phone with a water-resistance capability from KDDI and Sharp. Now, the companies that unveiled the above mentioned handset have announced the launch of a similar capability phone in the Japanese market, called the SH002. Well, we believe that both the phones are one and the same as the looks and the features are exactly akin.

Electronista revealed that Japanese wireless provider KDDI is all set to unveil the solar-powered mobile phone, named the SH002, which is developed by Sharp.

Once charged through the included solar panel, the flip phone is able to deliver 10 minutes of talk-time or 140 minutes of standby time. In order to receive the stated battery life, the device needs to be exposed to the sun for around 2 hours. Moreover, there is a 1.1-inch electronic paper display that indicates the charging efficiency as well as status of the solar panel and battery.

The clamshell design handset is also said to be IPX5/7 rated for the resistance to water exposure.

Besides, it also comes with ‘Au Smart Sports for Fitness’ software that works with a Bluetooth-connected pedometer for gauging the amount of calories being burnt. The solar-powered phone also has the ability to inform users about the body fat in percentage. Also, the SH002 is pre-loaded with Japanese golf course map data and a built-in GPS sensor, enabling users to know how far they are from the pin.

A 3-inch display with a 480×854 resolution, up to 2GB microSD memory card, a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and image stabilization are some of the features of the Sharp SH002. A Wi-Fi radio, 1Seg TV tuner and Mobile wallet functionality round out the key specs.

Telefonica and NTT DoCoMo announce Toshiba TG01 Windows Mobile handset

Telefonica and NTT DoCoMo have planned to introduce Toshiba TG01 Windows Mobile handset in Spanish and Japanese markets, respectively. NTT Docomo will include the handset in its DoCoMo PRO series T-01A.

TG01 is a 9.9mm slim handset that bundles up 4.1-inch WVGA touchscreen display, microSD slot expandable up to 32GB, custom Tosh 3D GUI, 10.2 Mbps HSDPA, GPS and supports WiFi 802.11b/g.

DoCoMo Senior Vice President and Product Department Managing Director Kiyohito Nagata said: “DoCoMo looks forward to working with global operators such as Telefónica to jointly develop mobile services and applications for mutually enhanced global competitiveness. At the same time, we would be pleased if such efforts have the added effect of supporting Japanese mobile phone manufacturers in their attempts to expand handset sales overseas.”

“Operating system platforms are becoming more and more important to drive the extraordinary growth of mobile internet business. DoCoMo and Telefónica are leading operators in their respective markets and this is a great opportunity to provide their customers with best-in-class products and solutions,” said Luis Ezcurra, Manager of Handsets and Multimedia of Telefonica Espana.

The handset is claimed to be apt for customers looking for multipurpose, stylish touch-panel mobile handset. Both the companies, Telefónica and NTT DoCoMo are together on a look-out for new unique features to enhance the handset’s utility.

NTT Docomo and Telefonica will make the Toshiba TG01 Windows Mobile handset available between June and July, this year. The pricing details are yet to be announced.

Microsoft has affirmed the launch of the most rumored next-generation portable music player Zune HD. The company is also said to extend the Zune video service to Xbox LIVE internationally, this fall.

The Zune HD is an enhanced version of the Zune devices and promises to deliver a superior listening and viewing experience. The features of this device include a HD Radio receiver to provide users with improved sound quality as well as additional programs. The portable music player will be made available in the US, this fall.

Enrique Rodriguez, corporate vice president of the Microsoft TV, Video and Music Business Group said, “The Zune music player is an integral part of the overall Zune experience, and we’re proud to be growing and extending our offering beyond the device. The OLED touchscreen allows users to easily navigate through the contents. The screen also features 16:9 aspect ratio and resolution of 480 x 272 pixels. The Zune HD has a high definition video output system. This allows users to connect the media player through a premium HDMI audiovisual docking station direct to an HD TV. This docking wire needs to be purchased separately.

The media player will also feature Internet browser that is designed for multi-touch functionality. This Wi-Fi enabled player allows instant streaming of tracks from the Zune music store.

KDDI launches Hitachi Hi-Vision Cam Wooo - 720p video phone

Electronista hints that KDDI is all geared up with its latest launch, Hitachi Hi-Vision Cam Wooo. It’s not a camera but a video-capable phone that promises to take the phoning and camera features to the next level of enhancement. Moreover, the Japan-based network operator also introduced its summer 2009 roster of 13 mobile phones.

Talking about the video handset, it boasts the ability to record videos of 1280 x 720 pixels and deliver them at a maximum 30 frames per second. It features a 5-megapixel camera with 3X optical zoom, autofocus and image stabilization. The 720p video capture capability is possible at a relatively high 9Mbps bitrate. The phone claims to handle up to an hour of continuous shooting.

The Hitachi Hi-Vision Cam Wooo has an HDMI output and a microSDHC slot to store up to 2 hours of video (at maximum quality) on an 8GB external card.

Apart from that, the video phone is a 3G flip device that reveals a 3-inch display (854×480), enabling users to view 480p at native resolution. In addition to video playback, the handset allows users to access music playback for enhanced entertainment experience. All the multimedia content can be stored on a built-in 500MB of memory and an external microSD card.

Although the price is not clear, the Hitachi Hi-Vision Cam Wooo is expected to reach the Japanese market on June 24, 2009 through KDDI.

"It's time for us to take advantage of the amazing opportunity that is before us," said Google CEO Eric Schmidt, kicking off Google I/O 2009 in San Francisco. Schmidt was referring to the growing sense that the Internet and browsers--rather than a computer's operating system--will be the future foundation for application development.

The industry isn't quite ready for that yet. Many of applications demonstrated before the crowd of around 4,000 developers will require the widespread adoption of HTML 5 technologies, which are still under development by a consortium of companies and organizations.

Still, Google's Vic Gundotra, vice president of engineering, noted that the four modern open standards browsers (Firefox, Safari, Chrome,and Opera) are all adopting some HTML 5 technologies as they become more stable, taking every opportunity possible to ding Microsoft's Internet Explorer for lagging behind the other four browsers.

However, offstage after his keynote, Gundotra downplayed any conflict with Microsoft, noting that its task in moving toward HTML 5 is more complex because of the large number of enterprises running Internet Explorer, and the possibility that internal applications developed for that browser could break. "As they follow through, they are going to have a huge impact on moving the Web forward," he said.

Next Gen Google Phone

The second-generation Google phone will go on sale in Australia from the middle of next month, with a sleeker design and updated features aimed squarely at the iPhone's youth market.

The HTC Magic, based on Google's Android platform, is the successor to the HTC Dream, which went on sale in February as the first Google phone for the Australian market.

Vodafone and Three said they would be selling white and black versions of the Magic, respectively, from the middle of June.

Three, the only carrier to reveal pricing plans so far, will offer the device on a range of plans including for free on a $99 a month contract. Adding on 3GB of data for web browsing, the 3G phone can be had for just under $120 a month.

In the new device, the slide-out keyboard of the Dream is replaced by an on-screen virtual keyboard, similar to the iPhone. Its curved design fits the hand better than the Dream's square, angular chassis.

Samsung Bendable OLED prototype

We are all looking forward to the days when our computer screens will be as thin as a piece of paper, and it would appear that Samsung’s new ultra-thin flexible AMOLED screen is about ready to herald in that era.

Sure, this 6.5 inch flexible OLED that you see here is just a prototype, but you can at least see how flexible it is. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if you could spindle it. That is, roll it up like a kid who plays “telescope” with an ordinary piece of paper.

I can think of one application for this technology that I saw in a movie. In Red Mars, Val Kilmer has a mobile computer that must have a very flexible AMOLED screen. This screen took up a minimal amount of space, as he was able to retract it into its tiny case like a window blind.

I realize that many of you might not remember that 2000 movie, which was set in the year 2050. As I recall, the AMOLED was able to recognize Martian landmarks just by holding the screen up to them. I’m not certain if Samsung is working on that, but they will probably have it perfected by the mid-century. That isn’t a quote from the company, but it is a personal prediction.

In the meantime, let us all sit back and dream of classrooms of the future, where the teacher hands out a test on very flexible AMOLED paper. I would imagine that after the students were finished, he or she could stack them in a pile, put them in a machine, and they would have their grades in seconds.

The little rubber USB ninjas were cool and all, but they couldn’t possibly top this new USB drive. Nothing tops a Shuriken shaped USB drive, actually USB manufacturers might as well stop now. There’s no point in going on to create supposedly new and improved drives when the all time best drive has already been created. Granted, this can’t be used as a real Shuriken, which is a little disappointing. I’m willing to overlook that part though.

They have all kinds of warnings about handling with care due to sharp edges, but anyone who carries a USB Shuriken doesn’t bleed. Everyone knows that. Sadly it only holds 2GB, but yet again that can be overlooked based on the shape of the drive. I’m a little curious what they used to create the USB drive, if it’s just cheap plastic or a metallic type material. Either way though, they don’t list it on the product page. This will cost you ¥ 10,500.00 or a whopping $108.

Their watches are the oddest(weired) and most technologically irritating (i thot technology makes things easy) I have ever seen.

Scratch: The Ultimate DJ

“Go DJ! Yeah DJ!” That’s the jingle for Scratch: The Ultimate DJ, a new video game with a controller that is quite similar to DJ Hero.

As you can see, it comes with a turntable with a somewhat authentic vinyl record attached to it. There may not be an arm for you to scratch up the vinyl, but there are five buttons with a cross-fader. Scratch will allow the player to upload samples with a compatible USB mic, as well as use the preloaded ones.

As of now, I am not certain what console this will be available for. You might be able to see that there is an X, circle, square, and triangle for the buttons, so is it for Sony Playstation? The peripheral certainly seems versatile enough to be used for any console system, even a PC.

I believe that I previously mentioned how the controller on Scratch resembles the one for DJ Hero. If I had to choose the one that I would use, I would probably use the one from Scratch, as its buttons are on the side of the turntable and not on the turntable itself.

By the way, the Scratch controller can be used by both left-handed and right-handed players. I’m not certain if DJ Hero allots for that.

I guess we will see in the fall, when Scratch is due for release. There is planned to be a preview of this game at E3 if you can’t wait that long, though.

For those who have been looking for a formal looking yet stylish notebook HP has bought something for them. with their HP ProBook series.HP says that the new notebooks are designed with an eye towards minimalist style and combines matte and glossy surfaces. The machines are available with glossy and merlot finishes.

Genius G-Shot HD520 Latest Camcorder

Camcorders have changed drastically over the last few years from devices that recorded to tapes of different types to machines that use internal flash or hard drives to store video. With the move to flash storage and HDDs the cameras were also able to shrink to more portable sizes.

Genius has announced its first camcorder called the G-Shot HD520. The little camcorder weight less than six ounces and records video in 720p resolution. Video is encoded and compressed using MPEG-4/H.264 formats. In addition to recording video the camera can also take still images at 11-megapixels.

Video is stored to 32MB of internal memory and expansion up to 8GB with SDHC cards is possible. The camera has 5x digital zoom and features face tracking and electronic image stabilization. The screen for the camera is a 2.5-inch LCD that can rotate 270-degrees. The little camera sells for $149.

This is another new phone in HTC’s Touch series of smart phones. This phone is heavily focused on Internet and Networks as most of its strongest features are those that enable a better internet experience.

This quad band phone runs a the latest Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 and includes the Microsoft Pocket Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint for mobiles), and also a PDF reader. It runs on a 528 Mhz Qualcomm Processor with 192MB of RAM, ensuring a responsive interface.

The new LG R410 is one of the latest from the LG’s stable that is based on Intel’s Centrino 2 / Montevina platform, which promises better performance particularly in terms of computing and power efficiency. But does it really make a difference?

The two tone lid and glossy white keypad and palm rest underneath it looks good and gives notebook a classy look. The speakers have been placed right under the palm rest in place of being placed near the screen which gives it a neat and clean look.

The display is a bright and vibrant 14.1 inch LCD having a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and gives a comfortable viewing experience at various angles. The keyboard is good in terms of feel and comfort, plus the keys are big and shortcut keys are positioned well for easy access. The touchpad on the other hand is responsive, but some people might not like the design that much as the glossy finish tends to make fingers stick to the touchpad while working on it.

Audio performance is not the very best but it gives a good overall experience with its 1.5 watt SRS wow HD certified speakers, be it in movies or while playing songs.

LG has also included the removable Optical Disc Drive, also known as the weight saver, but very clearly a mere 200 grams of reduction in weight for a 2.4 Kg laptop is not much and that too by losing out on the optical drive.

When it comes to ports, R410 has all the standard ports like VGA, USB, LAN, and modem plus it also includes HDMI out which is becoming a standard these days replacing the good old S-video port. For Wireless connectivity this notebook features the latest Intel Wi-Fi link 5100 that supports a data transfer of about 300 Mb/Sec instead of conventional 108 Mb/Sec, but only with compatible hardware (Wi-Fi Routers).

Performance of the R 410 is good considering a PC Mark05 score of 4585, which means that this notebook good for most mobile computing jobs ranging from basic word editing to processor intensive tasks like video and photo manipulation. But considering the fact that it runs on the latest Intel Centrino2 platform with a processor having a 1033 MHz (FSB) Front Side Bus, a punchier performance was expected of it.

For graphics it utilises Intel’s new series 4 chip that has 10 Unified shaders as compared to 8 on the series 3 graphic chip by Intel. An improvement in performance was expected and R410 didn’t fail to impress by scoring 1349 Marks in 3D mark 05. Nevertheless the score is not good enough to play most game titles but yes the difference reflects in applications that require 3D acceleration be it in Photoshop or even a simple Windows Vista Screensaver.

Battery backup time of 2 hours and 7 minutes under test conditions on a 6-cell battery is not impressive at all as the Centrino 2 platform is meant to be energy efficient.

Overall LG R410 gives decent performance utilising latest notebook technologies, be it in terms of processor, onboard graphics or even Wi-Fi, making this notebook future ready. A price tag of Rs 43,000 makes R410 definitely hold an edge over other notebooks like Acer Aspire 2920 or Dell Inspiron 1525 falling in the same price band.

The ASUS EeePC has always been associated with chunky PC’s that seemed to be one step below a Laptop and a few above a Mobile. ASUS is now trying to change that reputation with the launch of their new EeePC S101 Netbook.

With sleek looks and slender curves, this one is a pleasure to look at. A welcome change to the previous models, which seem more like carefully carved bricks. This one is around 26mm height at its max near the back. It comes with a comparatively large keyboard making for a less strained typing experience, even the touchpad is of a generous size; it however has only one button, which acts as both the right and left mouse buttons depending on which side is clicked.

The netbook is based on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 chipset like its predecessors, with a gigabyte of RAM. The netbook has a 10.2 inch screen with a native resolution of 1024x600. It also has integrated Bluetooth and Wifi, 3 USB ports, an SD card reader and a webcam. With all this it weighs just over 1kg.

It comes with the option of either Xandros Linux or Windows XP, with the Linux model having a 32GB SSD hard drive, while the Windows version splits this capacity over a 16GB SSD hard disk. However with the Windows XP model you also get a 16GB SD card, so overall you get the same storage capacity either way.

With a classy design, which doesn’t compromise on features, the ASUS EeePC S101 clearly shows that even netbooks can be stylish objects, rather than just minimalist laptops for the budget conscious.

But the DataWind has launched its latest mobile internet browsing device the Pocket Surfer 2.0 which has outrun the pocket surfer 1. As it has a lot of good new features that attracts the consumers more than the version 1 does.

Pocket Surfer 2.0 connects to the web over GPRS, and the included SIM card comes with one year's worth of access, though that's limited to 20 hours per month. After the first year, you will need to pay £40 every 12 months to maintain this connection. Pocket Surfer 2.0 runs on a proprietary OS, which makes it impossible to install third-party applications, unlike the likes of Nokia's Internet Tablets. The menu system you're greeted with after startup is, a website hosted on Datawind's servers.

PocketSurfer 2 is tiny, fits in a shirt pocket and for the price (EUR 230 - US$310), you can overlook a few of the device's less than premium features such as the screen. The pocket surfer 2 is a dedicated handheld web surfing device with a 640 x 240 colour widescreen display and a QWERTY keyboard. It sells in the UK for around £180, which includes a year’s worth of limited wireless web access over a GPRS connection that offers excellent coverage and, in combination with Datawind’s acceleration technology, actually delivers data significantly faster than the majority of 3G devices – hence the download speed challenge. We’re talking megabytes in seconds – that sort of fast. Apparently the bulk of the speed is achieved by pre-compressing the Web content at the Datawind servers before it’s sent – either way, it’s very, very quick.

PocketSurfer 2 ’s 640px-wide screen, certainly delivers a more familiar and accessible Web experience than the phones.

The thumb-operated backlit QWERTY keyboard might take some getting used to, and you can really only expect so much out of the directional mouse-pointer pad, but such are the compromises when you’re dealing with portable devices.

Pocket Surfer 2 has a 5-hour usage life (or 5 days standby) from its Li-Polymer battery, that it has an inbuilt GPS unit, POP/IMAP/Web mail support (including attachments), Instant Messaging and a Web browser that supports HTML and Java.

In the wash, the PocketSurfer 2 looks like a decent compromise between the portability of a PDA/phone and the actual Web useability of a small laptop. The pricing makes it fairly accessible, and the Web-anywhere GPRS access contract makes it a pretty handy tool and is perhaps one of the first true "web in your pocket" experiences. It is worth adding another portable device to your PDA, phone, camera and IPod.

Designer and inventor extraordinaire Knut Karlsen recently unveiled an inspired approach to portable power that can’t be beat for its elegant simplicity: a prototype battery capable of charging itself when exposed to sunshine. His slick set of SunCat C-cells are wrapped in flexible photovoltaic panels and will slowly recharge when left to bask in the sun - just like a cat.

Rechargeable batteries are a boon to eco-enthusiasts who use portable electronics, however all too often they require additional peripherals in order to keep them charged. These devices generally take the form of a black box loaded with non-biodegradable plastics and heavy metals - not very earth-friendly.

Karlsen’s SunCat batteries circumvent chargers completely by integrating solar cells within the batteries themselves. To make these prototypes he attached 1.8V flexible photovoltaic cells onto 1.5V NiMH rechargeable batteries and connected them with a conductive silver pen and a few flat wires. The effect is similar to a trickle charger, which slowly charges a battery and can be left attached indefinitely without overcharging.

Karlsen plans to continue to tweak the batteries, adding capacitors to charge the batteries more efficiently and electronics to check when the batteries are full. We’re excited to see the results of his testing - finally, a justification for all those see-through gadgets with clear cases!

LG Answers the Green Call With a Solar-Powered Cell Phone

Not to be outdone by Samsung’s Blue Earth and ZTE’s Coral-200, LG recently unveiled its own solar-powered concept cell phone at the Wold Mobile Conference in Barcelona. The prototype, which features a solar-powered battery built right into the back cover, will be able to generate enough energy for 3 minutes worth of talk time for every 10 minutes of sun it soaks in. If left in natural light for longer periods of time, the battery will be able to power the phone for longer periods of time, eliminating or reducing the need for a conventional charger.

In terms of design, the LG handset seems to still be in its earliest stages (the mobile giant has yet to come up with a name for its eco-conscious creation). While Samsung has integrated green innovation into several aspects of the Blue Earth such as a CO2 emissions calculator and a body made out of recycled water bottles, LG has not released any details about the other specific sustainable features of their solar phone. However, as part of its “Life’s Good When It’s Green” initiative, the cutting-edge electronics company has announced its commitment to packaging its products in eco-friendly boxes printed with soy inks, using recycled paper and cardboard without laminate coating, and making its mobile handsets free of halogenated substances by removing Brominated flame retardants (BFR), chlorinated flame retardants (CFR) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from the manufacturing process by 2010.

Acer NVIDIA Ion PC

Acer has announced the AspireRevo, a small-form-factor PC which is the very first design win for the Nvidia Ion platform, the combination of the Nvidia GPU with an Intel Atom microprocessor.

Acer didn't announce pricing for the new SFF desktop, which includes the Nvidia Ion and a single-core Intel Atom 230. In a Tuesday afternoon conference call with Nvidia executives, product manager David Ragones said that Nvidia expected small-form-factor Ion platforms to be priced at about $299 or so, with the Ion chip taking up a large chunk of that, or between $50 to $100, with profit margins built in.

"We believe that fundamentally that this is going to disrupt the market, just like netbooks disrupted the notebook last year," Ragones said. "We believe that 2009 is going to be the year of the small-form-factor PC."

Nvidia's Ion platform has been designed to work with the Intel Atom processor, which can not decode 1080p video, although the Atom N280 has bumped up the Atom's video performance. Nvidia claims that even consumers interested in low-cost PCs will want to play back high-def video.

Over forty Ion designs are in the design pipeline, Ragones said, either in netbooks or small-for-factor PCs. In February, Nvidia chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang claimed that virtually every OEM would ship Ion-based products. Tuesday, Nvidia's Ragones said that Ion notebeooks are expected in the third quarter; desktops are expected a quarter before. Acer did not disclose when the AspireRevo was expected to ship.

Physically, the Acer is a thirtieth the size of a typical PC, taking up just a liter of space, and measuring 7.1 inches by 7.1 inches by 1.2 inches deep. Inside is a single-core Intel Atom 230, up to 4 Gbytes of DDR2-800 memory, up to 250 Gbytes worth of storage, and the ion. The AspireRevo will run either Windows Vista Home Premium or Basic, Ragones said.

On the AspireRevo's exterior are both VGA and HDMI connections as well as an eSATA connector for speedy external storage. A four-in-one card reader is also included.

EA, Crytek Offer Crysis Wars Free Trial Till April 17

So has Epson addressed these inkjet weaknesses with its new Stylus Office B40W business inkjet?

The Stylus Office B40W starts out as a simple, oblong box, covered in huge swathes of high-gloss, black plastic. Unfold the paper feed tray from the back of the top panel and the output tray from the front panel, extend the telescopic supports of each and you have a functional, but less stylish, general-purpose inkjet, geared to higher duty cycles than a typical home inkjet.
The controls on the left-hand side of the top panel include power, ink replacement and paper feed, as well as a button to turn the Wi-Fi adapter on and off. This is an inexpensive printer to have cable and wireless network connectivity as well as USB. There was a time when gadget lovers could only dream about owning the latest devices in the Japanese market, but all that has changed thanks to Dynamism. Its latest notebook import, the Flybook VM, looks like any other ultraportable at first glance, but its height-adjustable display sets it apart from other travel-friendly laptops. So does its $3,199 price tag.

Clad in a black casing with a silver keyboard bezel, the Flybook VM weighs in at 3.6 pounds and is just one-inch thick. If the ubiquitous black-and-silver look just doesn't do it for you, you can order the system with a silver, yellow, or red finish.

A T-shaped hump in the lid's exterior houses a telescopic mounting arm that lets you raise the 12.1-inch, 1280 x 768-pixel resolution widescreen display up an additional 2.3 inches. Two hinges, one at the base and one at the top of the mounting arm, provide the flexibility to tilt the panel upward while pulling it forward toward the front of the keyboard. If you're a frequent coach-class flyer or a railroad commuter, you'll love this notebook's design, which lets you view the screen without hunching over or straining your neck, even when you're crammed into a tight space.

The touchpad controller is responsive, but the left mouse button was erratic; at times it required several extra clicks to open or close a program. The keyboard is roomy enough for error-free typing, but the smallish right Shift key may be a problem for some users. Nestled between the two mouse buttons is a fingerprint reader, and a VGA webcam and two microphones are embedded in the upper display bezel for video calls.

Despite its relatively small footprint, the Flybook delivers a decent feature set, including two USB ports, a VGA output, and an ExpressCard slot. A dual-layer/multiformat DVD burner is a bonus. The power switch, a Wi-Fi switch, and colorful LED indicators are positioned above the keyboard and between two small-and underpowered-built-in speakers.

The Flybook features an Intel Core Duo L2400 processor running at 1.66 GHz, complemented by 2GB of DDR2 memory. The result was a good MobileMark 2005 score of 193-about 15 points higher than average for an ultraportable. The 30GB hard drive runs at 4,200 rpm; that's not a blazing speed, but it's enough to handle general productivity tasks with ease. Unfortunately, battery life clocked in at a dismal two hours and three minutes, well below the nearly five hours we've come to expect from ultraportables. Dynamism informed us that the Flybook VM was working on an extended battery for this system, but the online retailer couldn't give us a rated battery life.

The system's integrated Intel 945GM graphics solution with 128MB of shared video memory couldn't complete our 3DMark03 benchmark tests, so don't expect this system to run 3D games smoothly, if at all. Dynamism assures us, however, that this system will be able to run Vista and its Aero interface.

Dynamism covers the Flybook VM with a one-year warranty, which includes Worldwide FedEx Rescue Service. If for some reason the system cannot be serviced in the U.S., Dynamism will cover the round-trip costs of shipping it back to Japan for servicing. Dynamism will even e-mail you a completed shipping label; all you have to do is slap it on the box and call Federal Express for pickup. You also get unlimited toll-free telephone support.

The Flybook VM's battery life is woefully short for an ultraportable, but if a high coolness factor and great ergonomics are high on your priority list, this machine is worth checking out.

A new service is launching later in the year which is designed to bring console gaming to everyone, without the need for a games console, called OnLive.

All you will need to play games on the new OnLive system is either a TV, PC or a MAC, and it will work in a similar way to cloud computing, where the data is processed on its own servers, and then the information is sent over the internet.

The service will go into public beta this summer, and is expected to launch later on in the year, there is no word on how much the service will cost, but you can expect to pay a monthly subscription, plus the costs for the hardware.

It certainly seems very interesting, and if it gets decent game titles, it could really take off.

Sony Vaio P-Series netbook

Sony launched its ultra-lightweight P-Series netbook at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas last week. With the top of the range model costing £1,368.99 when bought directly from Sony it certainly isn't cheap, but it is undoubtedly an impressive bit of kit and takes the concept of portability to a whole new level.

The standard model weighs a paltry 638g making it feel almost like an empty shell when you pick it up. This figure is with a three-cell battery and while it won't be a massive burden, the six-cell version will add on a few extra grams, some of which can be shaved off by going for the version with the SSD drive.

Similarly, we weren't able to weigh the power adaptor, but it is small and light, so it won't tack on too much extra weight to the total.

Unlike Sony's recently released TT-series laptops which are encased in carbon fibre, the P-Series is made from plastic and because it's so thin we would be worried that it might be dangerously flimsy. None of the demo units we saw had any signs of damage, but we wouldn't suggest flinging this about too much.

Until someone perfects a flexible display that can be rolled up the device is about as small as it can be while still being functional.

The eight inch 16:9 widescreen is amazingly clear and runs at a resolution of 1600x768, which although an impressive technical feat does mean many users will end up squinting at the screen. There is a zoom function to help combat this or users can just turn down the resolution a notch or two, and given that most sites and applications are happy at lower resolutions so this shouldn't have a negative impact on usability.

In keeping the P-Series as small as possible Sony has had to ditch the trackpad, leaving just a nub nestled in the middle of the keyboard for cursor control. Personally I had no problems getting used to using the little joystick type control, but many customers may want to invest in a small external mouse to keep with them.

The brushed aluminium keyboard is a good size and the isolated keys are a nice touch. I found it easy to type on, even at speed except occasionally we kept brushing the mouse nub which it would treat as a mouse click (an option that can be disabled) and move the cursor to wherever the mouse pointer was located at the time.

The P-series sports two USB ports, one on each side and a combination HDMI/port extender. A small extender is provided adding video and wired Ethernet ports is included in the box.

Connectivity can be done via Bluetooth, draft-n Wi-Fi and there is a SIM-free 3G HSDPA modem and GPS built-in as well. Because there is not enough space above the screen, the webcam is situated off to the right, but it isn't angled at all meaning you're left tilting your head at odd angles if you want your face in the centre of the display when on a video conference.

It also features a hardware Wi-Fi on/off switch, something I always like to see in a netbook as it makes it very easy to turn the Wi-Fi on and off as needed which can noticeably extend battery life.

Below the keyboard are the left, right and middle mouse buttons, a shortcut button and the CrossMediaBar (XMB) launch button. The XMB allows users to boot straight into a menu system that PS3 and PSP owners will be familiar with and gives easy access to media such as photos, video and music as well as a web browser, Skype, Pidgin for instant messaging.

Sony mentioned that booting into the XMB took around 25 seconds and booting into Vista from the XMB took a further 1:45. However it should be noted that the model we were using was a prototype and Sony assured us it would be a bit quicker on the production model.

It runs Windows Vista Premium or Business edition, which runs happily, but given our first impressions of the upcoming Windows 7, its probably recommended upgrading to that as soon as possible.

Ultimately, the price tag is going to make the P-Series an exclusive device, a fully functional notebook that can slip into a handbag or a large coat pocket, which if you pull this out at a meeting it will surely turn some heads.
